Thailand confirms release of five hostages from Gaza

Bangkok announces the liberation of five Thai nationals held in Gaza since October 2023, expressing gratitude to international mediators and urging the swift release of remaining captives.

On January 30, 2025, the Thai government confirmed the release of five Thai hostages who had been held in Gaza since October 2023. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the Royal Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv verified the release, stating that the individuals are currently receiving medical treatment, with embassy officials facilitating immediate contact with their families in Thailand.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her elation upon receiving the news, acknowledging the prolonged efforts leading to this moment. She extended deep appreciation to Qatar, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, the United States, and other friendly nations, as well as the International Committee of the Red Cross, for their instrumental roles in securing the hostages’ release. The Prime Minister also thanked Israel for its assistance in ensuring the safe return of the Thai nationals.

The Thai government has instructed relevant agencies to coordinate urgently with Israeli authorities to facilitate the safe and swift return of the released individuals to Thailand. Foreign Minister Nikorndej Balankura announced plans to travel to Israel to oversee the process, aiming for the hostages to reunite with their families within the next ten days.

Despite this positive development, one Thai national remains in captivity. The government continues to call for the immediate release of all remaining hostages, emphasizing its commitment to securing their safe return. Since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict, 46 Thai nationals have died, and 28 others have been released.

The released individuals have been identified as Watchara Sriaoun, Pongsak Thaenna, Sathian Suwannakham, Surasak Rumnao, and Bannawat Saethao.

The Thai government reaffirms its support for peaceful solutions and the two-state approach to restore sustainable peace in the Gaza Strip. Efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the remaining Thai hostage and to provide support to the affected families.
