Escalation in southern Lebanon amid ceasefire violations

Recent incidents in southern Lebanon have intensified tensions, with multiple ceasefire breaches leading to casualties and raising concerns over the stability of the November 27 ceasefire agreement.

On January 27, 2025, Lebanese media reported six new Israeli violations of the ceasefire. An Israeli reconnaissance drone dropped a grenade in the town of Bani Haiyyan, injuring one person. Another drone targeted a municipal team working on road construction in the same town, resulting in additional injuries. Israeli forces also detained a Lebanese citizen in Wazzani and fired upon local residents. Furthermore, Israeli soldiers opened fire at Lebanese soldiers stationed west of Meiss El-Jabal, and drones were observed flying over Tyre, with reports of gunfire directed at residents in Zahajra town.

These incidents occurred a day after 24 people were killed and 134 others injured when Israeli forces fired upon displaced civilians attempting to return to their homes in southern Lebanon. The escalation coincides with Israel’s failure to withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory by the 60-day deadline stipulated in the ceasefire agreement. In response, the White House announced an extension of the withdrawal deadline to February 18, 2025.

Since the ceasefire took effect on November 27, 2024, Lebanese authorities have reported at least 660 Israeli violations. The agreement required Israel to withdraw its forces south of the Blue Line—a de facto border—in phases, while the Lebanese army was to deploy in southern Lebanon within 60 days. Data from the Lebanese Health Ministry indicates that since the onset of hostilities on October 8, 2023, at least 4,080 people have been killed, including women, children, and health workers, with 16,753 others injured.

The international community has expressed concern over the escalating violence and the numerous reported ceasefire violations. The situation remains volatile, with ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring compliance with the ceasefire terms and preventing further casualties.
