In a continued implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, Hamas has released additional Israeli captives, including female soldier Agam Berger and civilians Arbel Yehud and Gadi Mozes, along with five Thai workers. This marks a significant step in the ongoing prisoner exchange process between Hamas and Israel.
On Thursday, January 30, 2025, Hamas handed over Israeli soldier Agam Berger to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Al-Razan area of the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. Concurrently, Israeli civilians Arbel Yehud and Gadi Mozes were released in the southern city of Khan Younis. The handover in Khan Younis faced delays due to large crowds of Palestinians gathering at the site, but the captives were eventually transferred to the ICRC. The Israeli military confirmed the receipt of these individuals, who were subsequently transported to Israel for medical evaluations.
In addition to the Israeli captives, five Thai workers were released during the handover, which took place outside the ruins of the house of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. The Israeli army confirmed that it received the seven captives, who were then transferred to Israel.
The current ceasefire agreement, which commenced on January 19, 2025, has led to the release of ten Israeli captives in exchange for 290 Palestinian prisoners. The initial six-week phase of the ceasefire aims to facilitate the release of 33 Israeli captives in return for approximately 1,700 to 2,000 Palestinian detainees. This ceasefire has temporarily halted the conflict that began on October 7, 2023, resulting in significant casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza.
The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the ceasefire terms and the humane treatment of all captives. The release of captives on both sides is seen as a critical component in reducing tensions and fostering a potential path toward lasting peace in the region.
