Mass shooting at Swedish adult education center leaves approximately 10 dead

A tragic mass shooting at Campus Risbergska in Orebro, Sweden, has resulted in about 10 fatalities and multiple injuries, marking the deadliest mass shooting in the country’s history.

On February 4, 2025, around 12:30 PM local time, a 35-year-old man armed with an automatic weapon opened fire at Campus Risbergska, an adult education center in Orebro, central Sweden. The assailant, who was not previously known to police, is believed to be among the deceased. Authorities have stated that no children were harmed in the attack, as the institution primarily serves adults, including immigrants learning Swedish and individuals pursuing vocational training.

Emergency services responded swiftly, evacuating the area and attending to the injured. Six individuals have been hospitalized, with one reported to be in serious condition. The police have initiated an investigation into murder, arson, and aggravated weapons offenses. While the shooter is believed to have acted alone, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional perpetrators and are conducting a thorough search of the premises.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the attack, describing it as the worst mass shooting in the nation’s history. He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the profound impact of this tragedy on the country. King Carl XVI Gustaf also conveyed his sympathies, stating, “We send our condolences tonight to the families and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts at this time also go to the injured and their relatives, as well as to others affected.”

The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. This incident has shocked the Swedish community, highlighting ongoing concerns about gun violence in a country known for its strict firearm regulations. Despite these laws, Sweden has experienced a notable rate of gun ownership and related gang violence in recent years.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could assist in understanding the circumstances leading to this devastating event.
