NATO chief asserts ‘devastating’ response to any Russian attack

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has issued a stern warning to Russia, stating that any attack on the alliance would result in a “devastating” response, ensuring that Russian President Vladimir Putin would face defeat.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of a defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels on February 12, 2025, Rutte emphasized the alliance’s preparedness: “We have robust plans in place to keep our one billion people safe in a more dangerous world.” He highlighted that defense spending would be a primary focus of the meeting, urging member nations to meet and exceed current spending targets.

Rutte also addressed Russia’s ongoing destabilizing actions against NATO allies, underscoring the importance of unity and strength within the alliance. He concurred with U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for European nations to increase their defense contributions, stating, “I completely understand that the Americans want the Europeans and the Canadians to pay more.” He further stressed the need to bolster Ukraine’s position in anticipation of future peace negotiations, aiming for a durable and enduring resolution.

In response to intelligence reports suggesting that Russia could initiate a major war in Europe within five years, Rutte acknowledged the gravity of such assessments and reiterated NATO’s strong deterrence capabilities. “If Putin attacks NATO, the reaction will be devastating. He will lose.” He affirmed the alliance’s commitment to maintaining a powerful deterrent to dissuade any potential aggression.

The press conference set the stage for the upcoming defense ministers’ meeting, where discussions are expected to center on enhancing defense spending and addressing the security challenges posed by Russia’s actions.
