Scott Bessent confirmed as US Treasury Secretary

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Scott Bessent as the new Treasury Secretary, entrusting him with the nation’s economic leadership.

On January 27, 2025, the U.S. Senate confirmed Scott Bessent as the Treasury Secretary with a 68-29 vote, reflecting bipartisan support. Bessent, a seasoned investor and founder of Key Square Group, brings over 35 years of experience in investment management to the role.

During his confirmation hearing on January 16, Bessent outlined his vision to usher in a new economic “golden age” by implementing pro-growth regulatory policies, reducing taxes, and enhancing American energy production. He emphasized the importance of securing supply chains vulnerable to strategic competitors and ensuring the U.S. dollar remains the world’s reserve currency.

Bessent’s appointment marks a historic milestone as he becomes the first openly gay individual to serve as Treasury Secretary in a Republican administration. His diverse background includes advising both Democratic and Republican figures, notably working with philanthropist George Soros before aligning with President Donald Trump’s economic policies.

As Treasury Secretary, Bessent faces the immediate challenge of extending the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which is set to expire this year. He has expressed a commitment to making these tax cuts permanent and introducing new pro-growth policies aimed at reducing the tax burden on American manufacturers, service workers, and seniors.

Additionally, Bessent advocates for a gradual implementation of universal tariffs on U.S. imports, starting at 2.5% and increasing monthly by the same amount, potentially reaching up to 20%. This strategy aims to provide businesses and countries time to adjust and negotiate better trade deals.

Bessent’s confirmation adds to the list of President Trump’s cabinet appointees who have been approved by the Senate, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

With his extensive experience and strategic vision, Bessent is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s economic policies and addressing fiscal challenges in the years ahead.
