Sigrid Kaag named new UN Middle East envoy

Former Dutch Foreign Minister Sigrid Kaag has been appointed as the interim UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, concurrently serving as the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza.

On January 17, 2025, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Sigrid Kaag as the interim Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. Kaag, who previously held the position of Dutch Foreign Minister, will also continue her current role as the UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza.

This appointment follows the resignation of Tor Wennesland, who stepped down in November 2024 after four years in the role. Secretary-General Guterres expressed gratitude for Wennesland’s dedication and leadership during his tenure.

Kaag brings extensive experience to her new position, having served in various senior roles within the United Nations system and the Dutch government, including as Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. She is proficient in multiple languages, including Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, and Arabic, which will aid her in navigating the complex dynamics of the Middle East peace process.

In her concurrent role as the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, Kaag has been actively involved in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the region. She has highlighted the dire conditions faced by civilians, emphasizing the need for significant aid, adherence to humanitarian law, and coordinated reconstruction efforts.

Kaag’s dual responsibilities underscore the United Nations’ commitment to facilitating peace and providing humanitarian assistance in the Middle East. Her appointment as interim Special Coordinator is expected to bring renewed focus to the peace process, leveraging her diplomatic expertise and deep understanding of the region’s challenges.
