Thousands rally in Los Angeles against immigration policies

Demonstrators in Los Angeles protested against President Trump’s immigration policies, blocking the 101 Freeway and calling for reform.

On Sunday, thousands of protesters gathered in Los Angeles to voice their opposition to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent immigration policies, including intensified deportation efforts and stricter border controls. The demonstration began at the historic Mexican marketplace and progressed to the 101 Freeway, where participants halted traffic for several hours.

Protesters carried signs with messages such as “We Are Not Criminals” and “The real criminal is in the White House,” expressing their discontent with the administration’s stance on immigration. The Los Angeles Police Department noted that the protest was unauthorized and issued warnings about road closures. Despite the disruption, no arrests were reported during the day’s events.

Los Angeles, home to approximately 3.6 million immigrants—79% of whom are from Mexico and Central America—has seen heightened tensions following recent policy changes. On January 20, the administration announced the removal of the CBP One app, which previously allowed migrants to apply for legal entry into the U.S. Additionally, as of January 22, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been authorized to arrest undocumented individuals in or near sensitive locations such as churches, hospitals, and schools.

In response to these federal actions, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a “sanctuary city” ordinance in November 2024. This ordinance prohibits the use of city resources in federal immigration enforcement, aiming to protect the city’s immigrant population. Mayor Karen Bass expressed support for the measure, emphasizing the city’s commitment to ensuring that immigrants feel safe and supported.

The protest reflects ongoing national debates over immigration policies and the balance between federal enforcement and local protections. As the administration continues to implement its immigration agenda, cities like Los Angeles are taking steps to safeguard their immigrant communities.
