US lawmakers condemn Trump’s Gaza proposal as ethnic cleansing

U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to “take over” the Gaza Strip and relocate its Palestinian residents has been met with strong condemnation from U.S. lawmakers, who label the plan as an endorsement of ethnic cleansing.

On February 5, 2025, during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump announced his intention for the U.S. to assume control of Gaza, suggesting that Palestinians be resettled elsewhere to facilitate redevelopment of the area. He envisioned transforming Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” This proposal has drawn significant criticism for its potential violations of international law and the forced displacement of Palestinians.

Congressman Al Green addressed the House of Representatives, stating, “Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the President of the United States, the most powerful person in the world.” He emphasized that such actions are crimes against humanity and criticized both Trump and Netanyahu for their remarks. Green further declared his intention to initiate impeachment proceedings against the president, citing “dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.”

Similarly, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian American member of Congress, accused President Trump of “openly calling for ethnic cleansing” while seated beside a “genocidal war criminal,” referring to Prime Minister Netanyahu. She asserted, “Palestinians aren’t going anywhere,” rejecting the notion of forced relocation.

The proposal has also faced international rebuke. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Germany, France, and Turkey have expressed strong opposition, emphasizing the importance of protecting Palestinian rights and adhering to international law. Human rights organizations have condemned the plan, highlighting the potential for it to incite further regional instability and conflict.

In the wake of these developments, the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its actions in the enclave.

The controversy surrounding President Trump’s proposal underscores the complex and sensitive nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with many advocating for solutions that respect the rights and dignity of all parties involved.
